Randolph Scott is Local Marshal Dan Smith in 1870 Abilene, Kansas who has been hired by the local merchants to bring law and order to a town that is the end of the trail for cattle drives. Homesteaders arrive with young Lloyd Bridges in the lead. The Marshal knows there will be plenty of trouble when the homesteaders try to keep the cattlemen off their land by putting up barbed wire fencing. Scott gives a low key, yet very effective performance as the no-nonsense lawman, with an interesting romantic twist. He takes up with a sexy saloon girl played by Ann Dvorak, instead of the more virtuous and beautiful Rhonda Fleming.
