This delightful Harry Woods/Rodgers & Hart musical firmly established British song and dance queen, Jessie Matthews, as an international star. Forced off the stage at the peak of her career and to cancel her marriage to the wealthy Marquis of Staines because of a loathsome husband who is blackmailing her, Harriet Green (Matthews) sets off for South Africa, leaving her young daughter in the charge of Mrs. Hawkes (Betty Shale). Flashing forward, Green’s daughter, now grown up, is trying out for a musical directed by the demanding Leslie Benn (Sonnie Hale -Matthews real life husband). When Benn’s publicist, Tommy Thompson, realizes the striking resemblance between daughter and mother, he gets the brainstorm to stage the comeback of the “evergreen Harriet Green”. The stunt works and Benn’s show is a smash, never mind they have all committed fraud, which could get them each ten years in jail. All ends well as the deceived public admits the daughter is as good as her mother. Evergreen was the most successful British musical before Oliver! hit the screen in the 1960’s.
