This is a tough crime drama directed by veteran noir specialist Anthony Mann. Richard Basehart stars as a highly intelligent and deadly criminal who will kill without hesitation and without remorse. He lives alone in a small apartment with a dog that is almost as smart as he is. He is so resourceful he even operates on himself to remove a bullet when he is shot. His ability to leave no trace of his identity has the police baffled. After establishing this bleak prospect for his capture, the balance of the film, in almost scientific detail, shows how through dogged police work he is finally captured, albeit not alive. Jack Webb as Lee, the scientific brain who works on the evidence, is most interesting to watch in a prequel to the role he would later play as the LA Police Detective in the now famous Dragnet series.
