Keith Michell in the title role gives an excellent performance and masterful interpretation of Henry VIII’s tumultuous life. His first marriage to Katherine of Aragon, arranged to cement an alliance with Spain, ends in annulment on fabricated charges. His second, and most famous marriage to Anne Boleyn , ends in her beheading. His third marriage to Jane Seymour was the most satisfying, resulting in a male heir, Prince Edward the future Edward VI. After her death by fever, he endured his fourth marriage to Anne of Cleves, another marriage arranged for political reasons (Henry detested the woman) ending in annulment. His fifth marriage to a much younger Catherine Howard, ended in her execution when it was revealed that she was having an affair with Thomas Culpepper. His last and only surviving wife, Catherine Parr, lasted by being submissive to his increasing violent nature and helping to mend the rift between his daughters.
