Peter Lorre is Mr. Moto, a Japanese detective trying to thwart an espionage ring intent on sabotaging an armada of French ships passing through the Suez Canal. The villainous foreign agents are portrayed by George Sanders as the duplicitous Englishman, Eric Norvel, and Ricardo Cortez as Fabian. When the group arranges for Moto’s death, they kill the wrong man, which gives Moto time to work on his plan to counter the saboteur’s plot. Racing against time, as the French armada approaches the canal, Moto must dive underwater to set off a detonator prematurely to warn the ships of the impending disaster. Not only does Peter Lorre play the oriental detective, but he is also a master of disguise, playing a shopkeeper, a suave nightclub patron, and a juggler eavesdropping on Fabian’s meetings with his agents.
