Iranian director Mohsen Makhmalbaf’s The President is his latest film following a long career including such accolades as Kandahar (2001) and The Gardener(2012).

A recipient of the Golden Hugo jury prize at the Chicago International Film Festival, The President is about a repressive dictator who is thrown from power in a sweeping coup d’etat and confronted by the many citizens brutalized by his regime as he attempts to flee the country. Director Mohsen Makhmalbaf, a former political prisoner of the 1980’s Iranian regime, is best known for Kandahar (2001).
