“A piercing, powerful debut from Behrooz Karamizade”
EMPTY NETS is a powerful and multifaceted new film directed by Iranian-born filmmaker Behrooz Karamizade with cinematography by Ashkan Ashkani who also did the cinematography for Iranian director Mohammad Rasoulof, winner of a special award at Cannes for the Seed of the Sacred Fig. Rasoulof fled Iran just before the festival began, while Karamizade left years before to work out of Germany.
It starts as a love story with two Iranian youths, Amir and Narges, and evolves into a class struggle as the two must meet clandestinely to avoid the displeasure of Narges’s parents who have arranged for Narges to marry into her class. Amir desperately needs money to pull himself up to her level. In spite of Amir’s tenacity and hard work as part of a fishing crew, he is inevitably drawn into the darker side of his job selling illegally poached caviar carved out of the fish to earn more money. Things spiral downward as he is unable to reach above his class and his hopes to marry Narges are dashed.
EMPTY NETS has already received rave reviews, 100% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.
I look forward to hearing from you if we can arrange a booking for you.
